Notes

  • He is the only soldier surnamed Stinard that is found in theRevolutionary War records in the office of the Veterans'Administration. In his application for a pension he stated that helived in Westchester until driven away by the British.
While living in Westchester, he enlisted in 1776 and served eachyearuntil sometime in 1783, amounting to at least two years of actualservice, as a private in the New York troops under Captains Sacket,Thomas Hunt, Jacob Purdy, and Josiah Miller, and Colonels Honeywell,Thomas, Sheldon, and Frederick Weisenfels;he was in a skirmish withthe British when they burned Bedford.
After the Revolution he lived in Fishkill, Dutchess County, NY, andabout 1816 he moved to Warwick. In 1836 he was living with agranddaughter (name not given) in Orange County.
He was allowed a pension on his application executed September 4, 1832(Claim S 23,433, Certificate No. 31,058, New York Agency). Arrears ofpension due at his death, covering the period from March 4, 1848toJuly 25, 1848, were paid to James Ovington on January 10, 1849, asattorney for the pensioner. The record states that he "left no widowbutleft surviving one son, Sylvester H Stinard".
In 1786 his occupation is given as tailor. He was probably not veryprosperous. No record has been found of his owning any land. By 1825,when all of his children had left home, he owned one cow and one hog.
His wife's name has not been learned, nor has the place of burial ofeither been found. Her son's Bible states only that she died June 3,1826, aged seventy-four years.
The Census of 1790, Westchester, says Oglesbury had two sons under16and three daughters; the Census of 1800, Fishkill, two sons under10,one between 10 and 16, and one between 16 and 26, and threedaughters, two between 10 and 16 and one between 16 and 26. Nothinghas been learned of any of these apart from Sylvester, except that oneof them was probably the parent of the granddaughter with whomOglesbury was living in 1836, and that the only one to survive him wasSylvester.
